Theme - What's it all about?
Understanding theme is a difficult concept. It is not explicitly stated in the story, yet is inherent to the plot line. On a basic level, theme is the message or moral of the story. The trick is that you must figure out the theme yourself by analyzing the characters, plot and setting of the story. Then, using your schema (ask your fourth grader what this is), you must infer the theme.
One of the many activities we completed to practice this skill was to watch SuperBowl commercials and identify the theme of each commercial. The students loved this - they found it both motivating and fun. I loved it because it was a sneaky way for me to have the students apply their knowledge!
Theme is not one word, it is a phrase or a sentence.
