"Building" the Ark and Dove
Our class was tasked with the challenge of "building" the Ark and Dove, the two ships that carried the first settlers to the colony of Maryland in 1634. We went to an unused area of the parking lot and measured the perimeter of each of the skips. We were astounded at how small and narrow the two ships seemed.
** Our ship perimeters were inaccurate - we measured rectangles, but discussed that the actual ships were not rectangular-shaped and would have seemed even smaller than our measurements.

This was our prompt. We broke up into groups and each team was responsible for measuring out one side of each ship. By the end, we were all helping each other to get the job done. What an incredible group of kids!
The first thing we noticed was how large it seemed. After we took a jog around the perimeter and discussed what was to be packed below decks, we realized how tight and closed the space really was.
** Another inaccuracy - the Ark and Dove were two merchant ships that had made the transatlantic voyage multiple times before this trip. I took some creative liberties for this activity.
