Sequence
Sequencing means putting events in the order they occurred.
Sequencing is important because:
Transition words are important when we are sequencing because they also help us understand the order to do things or the order events occurred in a story.
Sequencing is important because:
- it helps us understand what is going on in a story
- it helps us get to new places when we are following directions
- it helps us when we are cooking or baking so our food is delicious

Peanut Butter and Jelly Time
We practiced sequencing as we made peanut butter (or sunflower seed butter) and jelly sandwiches. Here's how we did it:
First, we listed the steps to making a pb&j sandwich. Some of us used transition words, some didn't.
Then, we shared our steps as we made mock pb&j sandwiches. Students worked in pairs as one student read his/her directions and the other followed them. Them they switched roles. The results were hilarious as we realized how many important steps were left out of our initial set of directions.
After that, each pair wrote up the steps to making a pb&j sandwich together.
Next, we switched partners and repeated the above steps. This time, we used real bread, peanut butter and jelly. We followed our partners steps as we created a delicious treat to eat. Partners helped each other edit their lists as they followed each other's directions.
Fifth, we enjoyed our delicious treat.
Finally, we turned these steps into a complete paragraph with a topic sentence and concluding sentence.
